In the recent months I’ve come across several articles discussing the changes in populations in the suburbs and outer-lying areas. Many have grown as much as one and a half their original sizes since 2013. According to the Dallas Business Journal, the city that has made the largest jump in population is Prosper. Made possible in part by Deion Sanders and the school that he helped to build, Prosper has grown by more than 56 percent.

The same story goes on to share the 25 fastest growing cities between 2013 and 2017. Among them were Fort Worth, Keller, Azle, Weatherford, Southlake, and Burleson. Many economists believe that the surge in the growing suburbs is this generations “post-war” boom. What this means is, Millennials, those aged between 23 – 38, are now leaving the big city for the suburbs to start their families. Similar to what happened in the 1950s and 1960s after the wars.

The Wall Street Journal cited that the difference between this surge and the one that took place in the 50s and 60s is the growth has been more selective. The suburbs that are seeing the largest growth are the ones that not only offer good weather, but the ones where the jobs are going. Gone are the days where you have to commute into the big city to get a decent paying job. Just look at Frisco and Plano.

So, what does this mean for those of us living in Possum Kingdom, TX?

Since Possum Kingdom is still more than an hour outside of the Fort Worth, the closest major city, we haven’t seen the type of growth that those in the main DFW Metroplex are seeing. We’re still lucky enough to have the small-town vibe that many of us craved when we made our move out here. While many call Possum Kingdom home full-time, many still use the houses around the lake as vacation homes.

If you’re not currently living in Possum Kingdom, TX but considering a move out to the lake or purchasing a lake home, now is a great time to do it. As of September 2019, the average sale price of Possum Kingdom homes is $300,450, 53.3% below the average home price in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
